The result is a group of images that silently reveal different aspects of the subjects portrayed, and of a culture’s pre-established social, geographic and economical relationships.&lt;br /&gt;The several portraits included in the show, as well as the research, were created using images found commonly on the Internet. But they were also generated from a geographical and cultural distance: The images try to speak about Montreal from the perspective of an outsider; they are a failed attempt to grasp the cultural life of Montrealears made by an artist researching at 3,725 Km away. Coming from New York City the quintessential urban environment, what bearing if any does it have on your rural landscape work?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;L.B: It is true that I come from the urban environment of New York City and have lived here most of my life. I have spent nearly every summer in the Italian Alps.  This has conditioned my appreciation of nature and at the same time created a sort of duality which is always present in my work.  New York symbolizes man - Italy (mostly the rugged nature of the Alps) symbolizes nature.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;J.B. The different subject matters in your photographs, that is, the botanical gardens, the thickets or Monte Rosa, all share a common theme. What is your relationship/fascination with nature?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;L.B: Having passed my summer months in the Italian Alps, nature is above you, under you and to both sides.  Playing in the torrents, or climbing mountains and studying the visual around me, ingrained an admiration for the order in nature, structure, subtlety, and complexions found everywhere you look.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;J.B. The time of the "unspoiled" wilderness is largely past. The landscape today resonates as much with the ambiguities and contradictions of the late 20th century as with the romanticized works of such 19th-century painters as Caspar David Friedrich and John Frederick Kensett. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today, are we still allowed to appreciate landscape photography for its element of beauty? Is it possible? Or are we directly confronted with what we know, e.g. the impurities of pollution, industrialised agriculture, global warming? Doesn’t the illusion of the beautiful romantique landscape disappear as soon as the subject matter is put back into its context of today’s corrupted, contaminated nature? For instance, the cow of today is no longer just a cow, it brings with it questions such as: does it have mad cow disease? Is it organic?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; L.B: I strongly believe that an appreciation for beauty found in nature is still possible.  It is certainly something that I strive for.  It may be more difficult with all of the interference imposed by the media and the problems we are confronted with.  For instance, the size of the glacier on the Monte Rosa is approximately half what it was when I was a kid.  This is an alarming fact, but doesn't change how I view the immense beauty of this place I know so well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;L.B: What is of paramount interest in Modern Art for me is the fact that many interpretations can be given to a particular work.  All of these view points can be validated, and ultimately it is preferable for there to be many of these so called evaluations.  In my case, the cow is the man made element is the photographs. The domestication of cow has rendered them in the same way as a dog, animals designed for specific practical purposes.  We are adapting nature to the needs of man, hopefully taking into account the innate importance of nature in our own make-up, and not allowing us to devastate the earth completely and remember that everything comes from the earth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;J.B. There is a timeless quality to these shots of nature that makes one unsure of when they were taken. &lt;br /&gt;Beck, a lifelong New Yorker, spends most of his summers in the Italian Alps. This he credits with developing his love of the natural environment. The texture of water, leaves, rocks and trees that he is able to capture in his photographs is nothing short of impressive. &lt;br /&gt;Three series of images are on view in the current exhibition: one focuses on waterfalls, another overgrown thickets and the most recent on the Monte Rosa mountain range in Italy. The latter shows cows grazing in front of a glacier at an altitude of 2600 meters. &lt;br /&gt;These images seem to represent an archetypal vision of an unchanging world, yet according to Beck the glacier is half the size it was when he was a child. Beck’s work stops the decline, preserving these moments of beauty and grandeur before they slip away through our fingers. Thérèse a vraiment laissé une marque indélébile dans le milieu de l'art ici à Montréal, mais aussi au-delà de ses frontières. Tous ceux qui l'ont connue éprouvent certainement le même vide. Montréal ne sera malheureusement plus le même endroit sans elle. Même si elle combattait une lutte contre la maladie  qu'elle ne pouvait gagner, elle a quand même tenue que sa galerie participe à la dernière édition de la Toronto International Art Fair, fin octobre 2007. Elle espérait même participer à la Foire de Dubaï également cet automne. Deux des artistes qui avaient récemment exposées à sa galerie, Josée Pednault et Jessica Auer ainsi que son assistante Saada El-Akhrass ont vaillament et solidairement su représenter quand même la galerie lors de ces moments difficiles! Jusqu'à la toute fin Thérèse poursuivait ses efforts pour que l'art puisse avancer et prendre un peu plus d'espace dans nos vies. In other societies, certain kinds of stealing are condoned but actually encouraged, even eulogized. Lewis Stein's offense clearly belongs to the second category. The ancient Chinese have a name for him: "The elegant thief.' In snatching something away he imparts new meanings and possibilities onto them, making them richer, more intriguing and more poetic.&lt;br /&gt;"Stolen portraits" are born at the intersection of deliberate posing and happenstance.  Impressed by the frequency and fanfare with which tourists in China propped themselves in front of a famous or not-so-famous site, Lewis Stein would sneak up to the photographer as closely as possible with his own point-and-shoot camera.  He has thus captured the famously theatrical Chinese in formal, exaggerated poses but slightly off-guard.  Against the backdrop of a misty lake, the left index finger of a young woman in a pink raincoat still rests poetically on the carved stone post on a bridge, but her eyes have already drifted away.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mostly taken (stolen) in 1993, followed by a handful in the late 1990s and early 2000s, these portraits document the first wave of domestic tourism in post-Mao China, as the nascent middle class started to take their leisure onto the road.  As such "Stolen Portraits" are portraits of an entire nation caught in an instant of in-betweenness.  The old kingdom, waking up, still coiled stubbornly around the pillar in the forbidden palace like a tired dragon, but many people have begun to look away, dreaming other dreams.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Tribal peoples cursed and ducked upon their first encounters with the camera, afraid that the mysterious box would steal their souls.  May we all see the world as these visionaries.  Unlike us jaded, hyper-rational westerners, they saw cameras as they really are machines pregnant with potent magic and fantasy; vehicles of alchemic transformation from solid matter to image and spirit.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No, Lewis Stein did not steal the Chinese’s souls, but in stealing a snapshot or two(O.K., one hundred) he has left behind a bit of himself in the faraway land.  In seeing the Chinese as they saw themselves, albeit a bit off-kilter and off-centered, he has given his eyesight and insights to them as an eternal gift.  In this playful economy, when an elegant thief steals everybody benefits. Dans certaines sociétés, certains vols sont condamnés mais aussi tolérés et même encouragés. L'offense de Lewis Stein appartient clairement à la deuxième catégorie. Les Chinois de l'antiquité ont même un nom pour lui: 'le voleur élégant'. En 'volant' ces portraits, il infuse de nouvelles perspectives et possibilités,les rendants plus intriguants et plus poétiques.Saisis (volés) pour la plupart en 1993 puis à la fin des années 1990 et au début de l’an 2000, ces portraits documentent la première vague de tourisme domestique de la Chine post-Mao, alors que la classe moyenne commence à utiliser son temps de loisir  vers la route des vacances touristiques.&lt;br /&gt;Les ‘Portraits Volés’ sont aussi des portraits d’une nation vivant une période unique de son histoire, prises entre deux moments historiques. La vielle garde (le vieux royaume) est toujours présente, toujours obstinément entourée des piliers de la cité interdite tels des dragons fatigués, alors que plusieurs ont déjà commencés à regarder ailleurs afin de rêver d’autres rêves.&lt;br /&gt;Les peuples tribaux avec leurs premières rencontres avec la caméra, effrayés que la  boîte mystérieuse ne leur volent leurs âmes. Si nous pouvions voir le monde tels que ces visionnaires.. Contrairement à notre confort douillet d’occidentaux, hyper rationnels, ils voyaient ces caméras telles qu’elles sont vraiment, des machines capables de magie et de fantaisie, de véritables véhicules de transformations alchimiques traduisant la matière solide en image et esprit.&lt;br /&gt;Non, Lewis Stein n’a pas volé  l’âme chinoise mais en volant un cliché ou deux (d’accord plutôt une quarantaine..) il a laissé derrière lui un peu de lui-même. En voyant les Chinois comme ils se voient eux-mêmes, il a laissé sa vision et ses impressions à ce peuple comme un cadeau éternel.  Dans cette économie  joyeuse, quand un voleur élégant s’exerce, tous en profitent. In December 1992, I experimented for the first time with the simulation of a cellular automaton. Ever since, the 'cells' have occupied a firm place in my brain and an unsettled one in my mind.[1] "Altered attractors", "generating" and "blueprint" zooms into the universe of the brain and mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no objective path to memory or truth. It all depends on many internal and external influences in the body and its sensory system. The mind can be altered through the 'inner pharmacy' of our bodies. Transmitter substances exist naturally in our nervous system. They are amongst other things responsible for our state of mind. Transmitter action can be triggered from within the body and from outside stimulants. Not only am I using the substance of it in my own body, but also the very leaves for the creation of works of art. They are dried and collected until needed for production. Many kilos of these are scanned for shape and function, a pretty meditative style of work. The selected ones often look like characters, perhaps performers expressing something. They are placed to communicate with one another. After they altered my brain's performance, they become 'performers' themselves and this time I am controlling them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Three years ago, Australian scientists have discovered a way to track the electronic footpath of a single thought travelling through the human brain, in real time, using functional MRI [3]. My tea leaves could be neurons with invisible dendrites, axons and synapses - just imagine these and you have a neural network. The work of art becomes a still or a map of an ongoing process of something - perhaps of the microcosm of constructing thought. The leaves suggest patterns of activity for the magic time machine called memory. While you look at the work, your brain gets triggered and your fantasy interacts with the composition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Software is a dead substance. Bringing machine generated forms to something that can be read and understood in terms of real life and emotion means: giving life to an automaton, the Frankenstein of algorithms; zoomed into the Nothingness of bits and formula, still powerful enough to trigger one's fantasy towards the 'real'. Internal and external worlds are interdependent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Georg Mühleck, August 2007)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;[1] The search was started by the mathematician John von Neumann in 1963. Well-respected artists Max Dean and nichola feldman-kiss expose their own amorous relationship in the exhibition Runaway Bunny at Projex-Mtl Galerie (1000 Amherst #103). Dean lives in Toronto and is a pioneer of robotic art. Among the works included in this show is an image of Dean's Robotic Chair—a wooden seat that falls apart and then pulls itself back together, as well as his interactive video, &lt;em&gt;'I snap'&lt;/em&gt;. (Though I'm not sure if we should take this to mean he is apt to "fall apart" and "snap"!)&lt;br /&gt;Feldman-kiss lives in Ottawa, where she has been since 2001 at Canada's National Research Council on her &lt;em&gt;'mean body database'.&lt;/em&gt; This numerical description of her naked body is presented as a 7,662-page book. She turns the data from her body scans into the small figures encountered in a &lt;em&gt;'crowd of one self' &lt;/em&gt;and the very odd composite forms of the &lt;em&gt;'chimaera set'&lt;/em&gt;. Using three-dimensional software processes, nichola feldman-kiss has sought to achieve shapes that have been reduced to the most minimal bodily attributes so that, while recognizable,they have no specific referent. Dialogues avec Philippe Nemo diffusés par France-Culture en février-mars 1981. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Philippe Nemo- Dans Totalité et Infini, vous parlez longuement du visage. C’est là un de vos thèmes &lt;br /&gt;fréquents. En quoi consiste et à quoi sert cette phénoménologie du visage, c’est-à-dire, cette analyse&lt;br /&gt;de ce qui se passe quand je regarde autrui face à face?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Emmanuel Lévinas- Je ne sais si l’on peut parler de « phénoménologie » du visage, puisque la phénoménologie décrit ce ce qui apparaît. De même, je me demande si l’on peut parler d’un regard tourné vers le visage, car le regard est connaissance, perception. Je pense plutôt que l’accès au visage est d’emblée éthique. C’est lorsque vous voyez un nez, des yeux, un front un menton, et que vous&lt;br /&gt;pouvez les décrire, que vous vous tournez vers autrui comme vers un objet. La meilleure manière de rencontrer autrui, c’est de ne pas même remarquer la couleur de ses yeux, on n’est pas en relation sociale avec autrui. La relation avec le visage peut certes être dominée par la perception, mais ce qui est spécifiquement visage, c’est ce qui ne s’y réduit pas.&lt;br /&gt;Il y a d’abord la droiture même du visage, son exposition droite, sans défense. La peau du visage est celle qui reste la plus nue, la plus dénuée. La plus nue, bien que d’une nudité décente. La plus dénuée aussi : il y a dans le visage une pauvreté essentielle; la preuve en est qu’on essaie de masquer cette pauvreté en se&lt;br /&gt;donnant des poses, une contenance. Le visage est exposé, menacé, comme nous invitant à un acte de violence. En même temps, le visage est ce qui nous interdit de tuer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Philippe Nemo-  Les récits de guerre nous disent  en&lt;br /&gt;Effet qu’il est difficile de tuer quelqu’un qui vous regarde de face.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Emmanuel Lévinas- Le visage est signification,et digni-fication sans contexte. Je veux dire qu’autrui, dans la rectitude de son visage, n’est pas un personnage dans un contexte. D’ordinaire, on est un « personnage » : on est bonne, vice-président du Conseil d’État, fils d’un tel, tout ce qui est dans le passeport, la manière de se vêtir, de se présenter. En toute signification, au sens habituel du terme, est relative à un tel contexte : le sens de quelque chose tient dans sa relation à autre chose. Ici, au contraire, le visage est sens à lui seul. Toi, c’est toi. En ce sens, on peut dire que le visage n’est  pas « vu ». Il est ce qui ne peut devenir un contenu, que votre pensée embrasserait : il est l’incontournable, il vous mène au-delà.  C’est en cela que la signification du visage le fait sortir de l’être en tant que corrélatif d’un savoir. Au contraire, la vision est recherche d’une adéquation : elle est ce qui par excellence absorbe l’être. L’interdiction de tuer ne rend pas le meurtre impossible, même si l’autorité de l’interdit se maintient dans la mauvaise conscience du mal accompli- malignité du mal.  Elle apparaît aussi dans les Écritures, auxquelles l’humanité de l’homme est exposée autant qu’elle est engagée dans le monde. Mais à vrai dire l’apparition, dans l’être, de ces « étrangetés éthiques »- l’humanité de l’homme- est une rupture de l’être. Est-ce que le discours humain n’est pas aussi une façon de rompre ce que vous appelez « totalité ».?&lt;br /&gt; Emmanuel Lévinas-  Certainement. Visage et discours sont liés. Le visage parle, en ceci que c’est lui qui rend possible et commence tout  discours. Le visage parle. J’ai refusé tout à l’heure la notion de vision pour décrire la relation authentique avec autrui : c’est le discours et, plus exactement, la réponse ou la responsabilité, qui est cette relation authentique. &lt;br /&gt; Philippe Nemo-   Mais puisque le relation éthique est au-delà du savoir, et que d’autre part elle est authentiquement assumée par le discours, c’est donc que le discours lui-même n’est pas quelque chose de l’ordre du savoir.&lt;br /&gt; Emmanuel Lévinas-   J’ai toujours distingué en effet dans le discours, le dire et le dit. Que le dire doive comporter un dit est une nécessité du même ordre que celle qui impose une société, avec des lois, des institutions et des relations sociales. Mais le dire, c’est le fait que devant le visage je ne reste pas simplement là à le contempler, je lui réponds. Le dire est une manière de saluer autrui, mais saluer autrui, c’est déjà répondre de lui. Il est difficile de se taire en présence de quelqu’un ; cette difficulté a son fondement ultime dans cette signification propre du dire, quel que soit le dit. Il faut parler de quelque chose, de la pluie et du beau temps, peu importe, mais parler, répondre à lui et déjà répondre de lui.&lt;br /&gt; Philippe Nemo-   Dans le visage d’autrui, il y a, dites-vous, une « élévation », une « hauteur ». Autrui est plus haut que moi. Qu’entendez-vous par là?&lt;br /&gt; Emmanuel Lévinas-  Le « Tu ne tueras point » est la première parole du visage. Or c’est un ordre. Il y a dans l’apparition du visage un commandement, comme si un m aître me parlait. Pourtant, en même temps, Le visage d’autrui est dénué : c’est le pauvre pour lequel je peux tout et à qui je dois tout. Mais je pense que quelle que soit la motivation qui explique cette inversion, l’analyse du visage telle que je viens de la faire avec la maîtrise d’autrui et sa pauvreté, avec ma soumission et ma richesse, est première. Elle est le présupposé de toutes les relations humaines. S’il n’y avait pas cela,  nous ne dirions même pas, devant une porte ouverte : « Après-vous,  Monsieur ! » C’est un « Après vous Monsieur ! » originel que j’ai essayé de décrire.&lt;br /&gt;            Vous avez parlé de la passion de haine. Je craignais une objection beaucoup plus grave : Comment se fait-il qu’on puisse punir et réprimer ? Comment se fait-il qu’il y ait une justice ?Je réponds que c’est le fait de la multiplicité des hommes, la présence du tiers à côté d’autrui, qui conditionnent les lois et instaurent la justice. Si je suis seul avec l’autre, je lui dois tout ; mais il y a le tiers. Est-ce que je sais ce que mon prochain est par rapport au tiers?  Est-ce que je sais si le tiers est en intelligence avec lui ou sa victime?  Qui est mon prochain?  Il faut par conséquent peser, penser, jurer, en comparant l’incomparable. La relation interpersonnelle que j’établis avec autrui, je dois l’établir aussi avec les autres hommes; il y a donc nécessité de modérer ce privilège d’autrui ; d’où la justice. Est-ce à partir de cette expérience éthique que vous construisez une « éthique »? Car ensuite, l’éthique est faite de règles ; il faut établir ces règles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Emmanuel Lévinas- Ma tâche ne consiste pas à construire l’esthétique : j’essaie seulement d’en chercher le sens. Je ne crois pas en effet que toute philosophie doive être programmatique. C’est Husserl surtout qui a mis en avant l’idée d’un programme de la philosophie. On peut sans doute construire une éthique en fonction de ce que je viens de dire, mais ce n’est pas là mon thème propre.&lt;br /&gt;Philippe Nemo-  Pouvez-vous préciser en quoi cette découverte de l’éthique dans le visage rompt avec les philosophies de la totalité?&lt;br /&gt;Emmanuel Lévinas- Le savoir absolu, tel qu’il a été recherché, promis ou recommandé par la philosophie, est une pensée de l’Égal. Dans la vérité, l’être est embarrassé. Même si la vérité est considérée comme jamais définitive, il y a promesse d’une vérité plus complète et adéquate. Sans doute l’être fini que nous sommes ne peut pas, en fin de compte, achever la tâche du savoir : mais dans la limite où cette tâche est accomplie, elle consiste à faire que l’Autre devienne le Même. En revanche, l’idée de l’infini implique une pensée de l’Inégal. Je pars de l’idée cartésienne de l’infini, où l’ideatum de cette idée, c’est-à-dire ce que cette idée vise, est infiniment plus grand que l’acte même par lequel on le pense. Il y a disproportion entre l’acte et ce à quoi l’acte fait accéder. Pour Descartes, c’est là une des preuves de l’existence de Dieu : la pensée n’a pas pu produire quelque chose qui la dépasse ; il fallait que cette chose dût mise en nous. Il faut donc admettre un Dieu infini qui a mis en nous l’idée de l’infini. Mais ce n’est pas la preuve recherchée par Descartes qui m’intéresse ici. Je réfléchis ici dans l’étonnement à cette disproportion entre ce qu’il appelle la « réalité objective » et la « réalité formelle » de l’idée de Dieu, au paradoxe même-si anti-grec- d’une idée « mise » en moi, alors que Socrate nous a appris qu’il est impossible de mettre une idée dans une pensée sans l’y avoir déjà trouvée.,&lt;br /&gt;Or dans le visage, tel que j’en décris l’approche, se produit le même dépassement de l’acte par ce à quoi il mène. Dans l’accès au visage, il y a certainement aussi un accès à l’idée de Dieu. Chez Descartes l’idée de l’Infini n’est pas un savoir, mais un Désir. J’ai essayé de décrire la différence du Désir et du besoin par le fait que le Désir ne peut être satisfait; que le Désir, en quelque manière, se nourrit de ses propres faims et s’augmente de sa satisfaction; que le Désir est comme une pensée qui pense plus qu’elle ne pense, ou plus que ce qu’elle pense. Cette exposition solo sera la première à Montréal de cet artiste basé à Ottawa.&lt;br /&gt;     L’art de Göllner a été décrit comme un art de satire. En combinant une variété de différentes approches et  techniques pouvant s’adapter aux environnements dans lesquels ils sont présentés, Göllner utilise différents médiums et des sources variées pour réaliser son œuvre. La série de cartes de jeu inspirée d’images de la guerre froide en est un exemple. En utilisant des références inspirées du modernisme, il parvient à questionner par la même occasion  la culture de la société de consommation. &lt;br /&gt;« Mon intention est de satiriser, mais je le fais d’une façon détournée. En émulant des styles graphiques et en employant des techniques de production industrielle, je réussi à créer des objets qui tentent de déjouer une interprétation simpliste de l’œuvre d’art. Les résultats sont légèrement subversifs.&lt;br /&gt;La série qui sera présentée à la galerie sont à la limite de l’art et du design. La précision industrielle avec laquelle les œuvres de  métal sont coupées, la finition texturée et la complexité des formes fabriquées évoquent les formes retrouvées dans l’architecture urbaine. Quand l’on découvre que ces formes sont en fait des traductions en langage morse et que les phrases sont les mantras du commerce : ‘Location, Location, Location’;  ‘Volume, Volume, Volume’;  ‘Win, Win’; (‘Gagnez, Gagnez’); l’interprétation des œuvres prends une toute autre dimension.&lt;br /&gt;    La série Ikea imprimable poursuit dans le même ton. Dans ses prises de vue, le photographe Lawrence Beck nous emmène avec lui en promenade à destination de ces entre-lieux à la lisière de l'urbain. Faisant référence à des groupes de buissons serrés et touffus, le titre de l'exposition, Thickets, traduit bien l'épaisseur de ces entrelacs, de ces boucles que constitue le réseau serré des branchages s'accrochant aux arbres en les parasitant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Traitant ce sujet par une série de photographies, le plus souvent verticales et de format à peu près identique, Beck a produit ces tirages en noir et blanc qui étonnent par leurs tonalités si nettes au sélénium et la qualité des gris et des noirs. Chaque photo a pour titre un chiffre romain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Le résultat de toutes ces battures à travers les fourrés, objectif en bandoulière, apparaît au départ ultra-classique. Les centaines de branches en tous sens évoquent un foisonnement organique. L'absence de feuilles, toutefois, privilégie les curvilignes sèches des branches en méandres qui s'allongent selon une linéarité imprévisible. Séduits par la qualité plastique de ces tracés, suivant ces déroulements et les tournoiements tordus de ces futaies, on se sent vite aspirés dans une curieuse dynamique «boomerang».&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Peu à peu, nous voici happés par les qualités graphiques de ce qui nous apparaît comme les mailles d'un réseau pictural. Ces ramures, ces sarments, ces lianes qui se percutent en enveloppant le fond de ciel finissent par apparaître comme autant de coups de pinceau sinueux et dégoulinant sur une toile, si bizarrement proches des drippings expressionnistes. À contre-cliché, ces tirages traditionnels transportent ainsi avec fougue un mouvement, comme un avant-goût de peinture abstraite et gestuelle. À ces témoignages de solitude dans la foule, à cette dénonciation d'une urbanité déshumanisante chez Samuel Roy-Bois succède, loin des zones grises, l'iconologie heureuse de Carl Ostendarp. Sous des dehors pop et enjoués, cet artiste de New York glorifie le couple, la famille, l'amour heureux ! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ostendarp le fait en conjuguant poésie et sensualité. Hauts en couleur, ses ingrédients animent joyeusement, comme autant de petites fêtes, votre oeil ravi. Ici, contrairement à ce que de nombreux artistes se sont évertués à prêcher, le sexe n'est pas forcément vécu comme une exploitation. L'enfance n'est pas forcément le terrain d'une répression, l'adolescence, d'une rébellion à coups de tags. La vision du monde adulte qui nous est proposée ne se conjugue pas avec la mesure d'une aliénation incommensurable alors que l'art, selon de vieux réflexes puritains, se doit de ne pas être trop séduisant. Le plaisir qu'il vous procurerait alors, en un hédonisme petit-bourgeois suspect, risquerait d'éloigner le regardeur -- ainsi conforté dans sa vision manichéenne -- de la mission moralisatrice de l'artiste, celle de lancer à la cantonade ses quatre vérités à un monde cruel où règne l'iniquité ! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bien sûr, je charrie ! Il est vrai cependant que les acryliques et les gouaches toutes simples d'Ostendarp transportent avec elles un vent de fraîcheur. S'éloignant du courant «politiquement correct» que l'on nous ressert depuis une quinzaine d'années, l'attitude générale y serait, non plus d'observer ou de critiquer le monde, mais d'être de ce monde en magnifiant certains de ces éléments rassembleurs. Ici, l'aspect social peut être facilement interprété de façon positive par tous et chacun. Ces images se font points de ralliement. Elles nous rappellent des joies ressenties par tous, comme celle de voir grandir ses enfants. Ces aplats aux couleurs vives, mauves, oranges, jades, azur et pastels représentent des mains. Parfois, les doigts de ces mains exhibent des anneaux comme signe d'union conjugale. On trouve souvent sur une même toile de grandes et de petites mains, suggérant qu'il pourrait s'agir de parents et d'enfants. Dans leur forme, ces images s'inspirent tout aussi bien de Matisse que du pop des années 60, de Miro que du minimalisme, et bien sûr de la bédé, tout en faisant un pied de nez à certaines conventions ou certaines «critiques» véhiculées par l'art contemporain. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;D'autres tableaux représentent des pieds. Plus olé ! olé !, ils évoquent le désir charnel. Pieds arqués, tordus, ou épanouis, les orteils dressés en éventail, dans la jouissance. Schématisés, croisés mais tracés à l'horizontale, ces couples de pieds rappellent parfois ironiquement le fameux pictogramme «J'aime ma femme» sur les plaques de voitures de la fin des années 70. Réducteur, ce rapprochement indique pourtant que la peinture selon Ostendarp ne se prend pas trop la tête en tentant de nous transmettre un énoncé accusateur. Au contraire. Amusants, à la fois ouverts mais un peu mystérieux, ces éclats bon enfant ne sont là que pour nous réjouir. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exposant régulièrement à Paris, à New York et ailleurs, Carl Ostendarp est représenté dans les collections d'une dizaine de musées américains, dont le Whitney.
